Chandler Advocates for Gaethje’s Title Shot Ahead of UFC 314 Showdown

MIAMI – Michael Chandler has thrown his support behind former opponent Justin Gaethje for the next title shot in the UFC lightweight division. With a highly competitive landscape featuring contenders Ilia Topuria, Arman Tsarukyan, and Charles Oliveira, Chandler hopes Gaethje gets the opportunity to challenge current champion Islam Makhachev. This endorsement comes just days before Chandler’s own fight against Paddy Pimblett at UFC 314, scheduled for Saturday night at Kaseya Center.
Chandler, a former Bellator champion, expressed his feelings during a media day, stating, “If I’m thinking with my heart, I want Gaethje to get a shot.” Despite some skepticism about Gaethje’s recent performance—having faced a tough loss against Max Holloway—Chandler argues that the risk Gaethje took in putting his No. 1 ranking on the line against Holloway should be considered positively.
“Gaethje being the No. 1 guy and putting that No. 1 ranking on the line against Max Holloway for the BMF belt, and then losing that, so then he drops down a notch,” Chandler noted. He acknowledged the rapid evolution of the lightweight division, filled with uncertainties and potential shifts as fighters like Dustin Poirier retire and others explore moving up in weight classes.
Chandler’s own fight against Pimblett is crucial for his aspirations within the division. “The coolest thing is just being a part of the most interesting division in the world,” he remarked, emphasizing the dynamic nature of the competition. The outcome of his match might further alter the paths of several contenders, including Gaethje.
Meanwhile, Gaethje remains optimistic about securing a title fight. “I’m ready to fight in June,” he told The Schmo. He pointed out his recent record, stating, “I’m 4-1 in my last five fights, only losing to Max Holloway.” Gaethje believes his case for a title shot is strong, especially considering the shifts among potential contenders, including Topuria and Tsarukyan.
The lightweight landscape is ever-changing. With Makhachev having defended his title recently, Gaethje is hopeful for the call to challenge for the belt in the coming months. “We’ll see what they do,” he added, alluding to the unpredictable decisions made by UFC management.
As Chandler prepares for his own critical matchup against Pimblett, he remains a vocal advocate for Gaethje, showcasing the camaraderie and competition that characterize the sport. Both fighters are on a quest to solidify their places in the title contention narrative at a time when the lightweight division is primed for change.
