LOS ANGELES, Calif. — The Los Angeles Chargers have signed former Philadelphia Eagles guard Mekhi Becton to a two-year, $20 million contract, the team announced on Friday.

Becton, a first-round draft pick in 2020, is viewed as a crucial signing for the Chargers, who struggled with their interior offensive line last season. According to NFL statistics, the team’s line ranked near the bottom in run block win rate. The Chargers’ center performed at 160th, left guard at 165th, and right guard at 188th in the league.

“This is an important step for our organization,” said Chargers head coach Jim Harbaugh. “Our offensive line needed improvement, and Mekhi brings both size and skill to the table.”

Last season represented a rebound year for Becton, who switched from tackle to guard and excelled in the Eagles’ system. He finished 24th in run block win rate among guards, significantly outperforming his counterparts on the Chargers’ line.

At 6-foot-7 and 363 pounds, Becton started 15 regular-season games for the Super Bowl champion Eagles after winning the right guard position during summer training camps. His ability to create lanes for MVP finalist and NFL Offensive Player of the Year Jalen Hurts solidified his role as a key player in Philadelphia’s offense.

Becton began his career with the New York Jets, where he made 30 starts, primarily at left tackle. However, injuries limited his participation in 2021 and 2022 seasons, forcing him to sit out most games. “The change to guard was a blessing for me,” Becton said. “I feel more comfortable and ready to help my new team.”

This signing may also indicate that the Chargers are considering releasing current right guard Storm Pipkins, which would free up approximately $6.75 million in cap space.

Becton is now prepared to join forces with running back Najee Harris, who recently signed a one-year deal with the Chargers worth up to $9.5 million after leaving the Pittsburgh Steelers.
