Chase Dollander Set for MLB Debut with Rockies This Sunday

DENVER—Chase Dollander, the Colorado Rockies‘ top pitching prospect, is scheduled to make his Major League debut this Sunday against the Oakland Athletics at Coors Field. Rockies manager Bud Black expressed his anticipation for the game, stating, “Full disclosure: I’m looking forward to Sunday.”
Dollander, the ninth overall pick in the 2023 MLB Draft, has shown promising potential despite an inconsistent spring training. The 23-year-old right-hander finished the spring with a 2-3 record, a 7.12 ERA, and 24 strikeouts over 17 2/3 innings pitched.
After finishing the previous season with the Double-A Hartford Yard Goats, where he made nine starts, Dollander made his Triple-A debut last Sunday with the Albuquerque Isotopes. In that game against Sacramento, he pitched four innings, struck out five batters, and allowed just one run, contributing to a 2-1 Isotopes victory.
In a roster move prompted by injuries, Dollander will take the rotation spot of Austin Gomber, who has been sidelined during spring training and will need more time for recovery. The Rockies have opted to delay Gomber’s return, leaving the door open for Dollander’s immediate opportunity.
Regarded for his impressive fastball, Dollander’s selections in the draft reflect his considerable talent. He transferred to Tennessee from Georgia Southern and was named the SEC Pitcher of the Year in 2022. Rockies scouts have noted his ability to spin the ball well and have maintained high expectations for his performance at the major league level.
“He’s got a good arm, a good live arm. I like the stuff; it’s real stuff,” Black said about Dollander’s abilities. “It’s a good fastball with velocity; he can spin the ball, he’s got a little bit of feel for a change. I’m looking forward to watching this unfold, to watch his career,” Black added.
Expectations are high for Dollander as he prepares for his first start at Coors Field, especially given the unique challenges pitchers face at such a high altitude. Black noted, “He’s built the right way in a lot of areas… he’s a good talent with a good head on his shoulders.”
The Rockies hope Dollander will help solidify their pitching rotation and potentially become the first true ace developed by the organization. His performance on Sunday will be closely watched as the Rockies embark on the 2025 season.
