Chattanooga Basketball Team Celebrating Nit Victory

INDIANAPOLIS, IN — The Chattanooga Mocs captured the 2025 National Invitation Tournament (NIT) Championship on Thursday night, defeating UC Irvine 85-84 in a nail-biting overtime finale at historic Hinkle Fieldhouse. This victory marks Chattanooga’s first NIT title and ties the program record for wins in a season with 29.

Forward Garrison Keeslar delivered the game-winning jump shot with just 11 seconds remaining in the overtime period, solidifying an unforgettable season for the Mocs, who have not celebrated a national tournament championship since securing the NCAA Division II title in 1977.

The Mocs faced a challenging second half, with the Anteaters surging ahead thanks to an 11-2 run, taking an 8-point lead at 48-40. However, Chattanooga rallied, with Keeslar and guard Trey Bonham leading the comeback efforts. Bonham finished with a double-double, scoring 19 points and adding 10 rebounds, earning him the title of Most Outstanding Player.

As the final minutes of the game approached, the tension escalated. The Mocs were trailing 74-73 when Keeslar connected with a three-pointer, bringing the score back to a one-point deficit. UC Irvine’s Justin Hohn missed crucial free throws with less than 30 seconds remaining, setting the stage for Honor Huff‘s heroics, who converted three free throws to put Chattanooga ahead 76-74.

In a critical moment, Keeslar was fouled by former Moc Myles Che, and he managed to tie the game with free throws, ultimately leading to a back-and-forth finish filled with lead changes.

The final moments of overtime were frantic. UC Irvine’s Devin Tillis hit one of two free throws, giving the Anteaters an 82-80 lead, before Chattanooga’s Mulholland answered with a crucial three-pointer. In a wild last play, UC Irvine’s attempt to tie the game was thwarted when Jurian Dixon’s layup fell short at the buzzer.

“This is the culmination of our hard work all season long,” Keeslar said. “Winning this title is what we’ve dreamt of, and it’s incredible to do it for our fans and the community.”

Chattanooga’s victory follows an impressive season, marking their longest postseason run in history. The Mocs’ previous best was an appearance in the NCAA tournament second round. They managed to turn a potential disaster into triumph after defeating Loyola Chicago in the semifinals.

UC Irvine, despite the loss, finished the season with an impressive record of 32-7. The Anteaters had entered the NIT as a worthy competitor after a strong conference showing, earning respect nationally.

The NIT semifinals and championship game at Hinkle Fieldhouse highlighted the competitive nature of college basketball, with both teams showcasing skill, determination, and moments of pure basketball drama.

Chattanooga’s season culminates with a remarkable achievement, further establishing the Mocs in NCAA basketball history. They leave the tournament not just as champions but as a story of resilience and a testament to their dedication.
