New Delhi, India — The Chennai Super Kings (CSK) announced the signing of South African cricketer Dewald Brevis on April 18, 2025, in response to an injury setback for pacer Gurjapneet Singh. Brevis, 21, will join CSK’s roster midway through the IPL 2025 season, having previously played for the Mumbai Indians.

Gurjapneet Singh is sidelined for the remainder of the season due to an elbow fracture and finishes with no appearances. He had a hefty price tag of INR 2.2 crore, making him one of the most expensive players without a game this season. In contrast, Brevis, who was signed for the same amount, had proven his worth during T20 competitions, scoring 1,787 runs across 81 matches with a highest score of 162.

The decision to acquire Brevis comes as CSK seeks to improve its dismal performance, which has seen them win only two of seven matches this season. CSK’s management confirmed that Brevis will fill one of the last overseas slots available in their squad.

CSK’s tweet announcing the signing showcased excitement for Brevis, emphasizing the “Protea Firepower” he brings to the team. Before the official announcement, Brevis teased his fans by posting a yellow-themed image on Instagram, hinting at a move to CSK.

“We are thrilled to welcome Dewald Brevis to the team,” said CSK management in a statement. “He has immense talent and energy, and we believe he will be a game-changer for us as we aim to turn our season around.”

Brevis has made a name for himself with a reputation for aggressive batting, averaging 48.5 in T20 matches this year, with a remarkable strike rate of 184.2. His performances during the CSA 4-Day Series Division 1 with the Titans, where he scored 573 runs in 12 innings, demonstrate his consistency and hunger for runs.

As CSK prepares to face the Mumbai Indians, Brevis could make his debut against his former team on April 20. The match is critical as CSK continues its search for stability and victory in the tournament.

<p“With Brevis joining our batting lineup, we’re looking forward to leveraging his skills to boost our performance,” CSK captain MS Dhoni said. “His ability to change games will be crucial at this point in the season.”

CSK fans have shown optimism for Brevis’s potential contribution, despite his mixed past season, which included limited opportunities with the Mumbai Indians.

“I believe this is a fresh start for him,” a long-time CSK supporter commented. “He has the talent to be the key player we need right now.”

The team hopes Brevis can be a vital asset they desperately need to navigate the challenges ahead in IPL 2025.
