Chicago P.D. Season 12 Returns with Wedding Bells and New Challenges
CHICAGO, Ill. — Season 12 of NBC‘s hit drama Chicago P.D. has returned with a bang, bringing fans back into the high-stakes world of the Intelligence Unit. The midseason premiere, which aired on January 8, 2025, promises a mix of personal drama, intense investigations, and a long-awaited wedding for fan-favorite characters Kim Burgess (Marina Squerciati) and Adam Ruzek (Patrick Flueger).
The season has already introduced new dynamics, including the addition of fresh detectives and a deepening tension between Sergeant Hank Voight (Jason Beghe) and Deputy Chief Reid. Reid, played by a yet-to-be-revealed actor, has been maneuvering behind the scenes, leveraging his knowledge of the unit’s secrets to exert control. Showrunner Gwen Sigan teased that Reid’s motives will become clearer as the season progresses, with Voight caught in a precarious position. “Reid has enough information to disband the unit or even jail certain members,” Sigan said. “But the question is, what does he want?”
Meanwhile, Burgess and Ruzek’s relationship continues to evolve as they juggle wedding planning, parenting their adopted son Mac, and their demanding jobs. The wedding is slated for the season finale, offering fans a satisfying conclusion to their long-running romance. Sigan hinted at the challenges the couple will face, saying, “They’re trying to enjoy this time in their lives, but it’s not easy with everything else going on.”
Season 12 also explores the emotional fallout for Detective Dante Torres (Benjamin Levy Aguilar) following the tragic death of Gloria, a storyline that has deeply affected him. “It’s triggered a lot for him, going all the way back to his childhood,” Sigan explained. “He’s dealing with a crisis of faith and trying to find his way through it.”
In addition to the personal storylines, the season features gripping cases, including a kidnapping investigation in Episode 9 and a haunting case involving an unidentified young girl in Episode 10. The latter episode also marks the return of Ruzek’s father, adding another layer of complexity to the detective’s life.
Fans can catch new episodes of Chicago P.D. every Wednesday at 10/9c on NBC, with episodes available to stream the next day on Peacock. The season promises to deliver the same mix of action, emotion, and character-driven drama that has made the show a staple of the One Chicago franchise.
