Austin, Texas – More than 1,000 volunteers gathered this weekend for the 39th annual Habitat for Humanity Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter Work Project, including Chip Carter, the son of the late President Jimmy Carter. This year marks the first time the event has taken place since President Carter’s passing last December.

Chip Carter, 75, expressed how different and emotional the experience was for him. ‘This year feels different since I’m the one doing the press,’ he said in an interview. ‘It’s an honor to be here with Habitat for Humanity, an organization my parents loved.’

The project, running from October 26 to 31, focuses on constructing 25 homes while raising awareness for affordable housing. Jonathan Reckford, CEO of Habitat for Humanity, commented, ‘We can never replace President and Mrs. Carter, but we know the best way to honor their work is to continue the work.’

Chip Carter shared fond memories of his parents and their commitment to community service. ‘Dad believed that volunteers were some of the most special people on Earth,’ he said. The work not only provides homes but fosters community spirit among volunteers and homeowners alike.

He recalled how his father never wanted to retire and continued his public service with organizations like the Carter Center. Chip aims to continue this legacy, stating, ‘Continuing my parents’ legacy is really important to me.’

As Chip reflects on his late father’s life, he emphasizes the values instilled in him: humility and service to others. ‘I celebrate my father’s life every day,’ he shared. ‘Those are the big things they taught us.’

The event draws not only senior volunteers like Chip but many others wanting to give back. The legacy of the Carters continues on through these efforts, leaving a lasting impact in the community.
