Christian Cueva Discusses Future Amid Emelec Move

GUAYAQUIL, Ecuador — Christian Cueva, a key player for Emelec, has shared his thoughts on his recent move to the Ecuadorian Serie A, reflecting on his journey from Cienciano to his new club. After struggling with injuries and inconsistent performances, Cueva has found renewed vigor under coach Carlos Desio.
During a press conference, Cueva detailed the circumstances surrounding his transfer, stating, “My idea was to stay all year with Cienciano. Due to penalties, my contract was reduced to June. Out of affection, I accepted that. Emelec had a close interest in me.” He expressed disappointment in not receiving a substantial offer from Cienciano to remain.
Cueva emphasized, “I didn’t have any offers from Cienciano until I communicated my departure. They only offered me to extend my contract, which I signed at the beginning of the year. It hurt me.” He felt that without clear interest from Cienciano, it was natural to move on to a club like Emelec, which actively pursued him.
Following his standout performance in the CONMEBOL Sudamericana, Cueva noted that Emelec was the only concrete offer he received. “I faced Emelec many times in the Copa Sudamericana. It’s a team everyone would want to join,” he remarked.
As Emelec prepares to face Universidad Católica, Cueva expressed confidence. “These are teams we need to respect. In a highly competitive league like Ecuador’s, we must always be cautious,” he said. He also praised the warm welcome he received from fans and club personnel, stating, “I’m happy to be with such an important team, and we must work hard going forward.”
In his reflections on his national team prospects, Cueva said, “Every player thinks about the national team. I wasn’t surprised about my absence in the last call-up because it’s the coach’s decision. However, I want to keep working hard to earn my place back.”
Cueva’s transition to Emelec has already sparked enthusiasm among the fans, and all eyes will be on him as he takes the field against their rivals this Wednesday.
