Christopher Landon Returns to Horror with ‘Drop’ Featuring Sinister AirDrops
LOS ANGELES, Calif. — Filmmaker Christopher Landon, known for genre-blending hits like ‘Happy Death Day‘ and the ‘Freaky‘ series, is returning to his horror roots with the upcoming thriller ‘Drop.’ The film, set for release in UK cinemas on April 11, 2025, features a chilling premise centered around Apple‘s AirDrop technology.
Starring Meghann Fahy of ‘The White Lotus‘ fame, ‘Drop’ follows Violet, a woman on a date who begins receiving anonymous, sinister messages via AirDrop. The messages urge her to kill the man she’s just met, escalating into a tense, Hitchcockian thriller. Landon, who previously ventured into family-friendly territory with ‘We Have a Ghost,’ described the film as a ‘pure genre exercise’ designed to keep audiences on edge.
‘Drop’ marks Landon’s latest collaboration with Blumhouse Productions, the studio behind many of his previous horror successes. The film’s modern twist on terror has already sparked conversations about the potential dangers of technology, with many viewers vowing to disable their AirDrop settings after watching the trailer.
For those unfamiliar, AirDrop allows users to send files, photos, and messages to nearby devices without revealing their identity. While typically used for harmless exchanges, the film explores its darker possibilities. ‘There’s something inherently unsettling about receiving a message from an unknown source,’ Landon said in a recent interview. ‘It’s a tool we use every day, but what if it turned into something sinister?’
Meghann Fahy, who plays the lead role of Violet, praised the script for its tension and originality. ‘It’s a fresh take on the horror genre,’ she said. ‘The idea that danger could be lurking in something as mundane as a phone notification is terrifying.’
Landon’s return to horror has been eagerly anticipated by fans of his previous work, which often blends humor with scares. With ‘Drop,’ he aims to deliver a straightforward, high-stakes thriller that keeps audiences guessing until the very end.
As the release date approaches, the film’s trailer has already gone viral, with viewers speculating about the identity of Violet’s AirDrop attacker and whether Landon will deliver another box office hit. For now, one thing is certain: ‘Drop’ is poised to make audiences think twice before enabling AirDrop on their devices.
