Circle K Gas Station Avon Ohio Diesel Mix Up

AVON, Ohio — A fuel delivery error at a Circle K gas station on Chester Road has left at least 14 customers with damaged vehicles, sparking outrage and costly repairs. The incident, which occurred on Sunday, Jan. 19, involved diesel fuel being mistakenly deposited into the station’s unleaded gasoline storage tank, and vice versa.

Circle K confirmed the error in a press release, stating, “At Circle K, we guarantee and stand by the quality of our fuels. However, issues sometimes arise, and customers should report them as soon as possible. We apologize to any customers affected by this issue, and we are working to assist them with their claims.” The company has since shut down and replaced the contaminated fuel, reopening the pumps after resolving the issue.

Scott Bauchmoyer, an Avon resident, was among the affected customers. His 2022 Jeep Wagoneer began sputtering and emitting white smoke after he filled up at the station. “I jumped in the car to start it up, and it just started sputtering. Lights started flashing, and there was a giant puff of white smoke,” Bauchmoyer said. His repairs cost $1,100, plus additional expenses for a rental car and towing.

Another customer, who wished to remain anonymous, reported that his Ford F350, which runs on diesel, was filled with unleaded gasoline at the same station. His truck is now in the repair shop. Circle K confirmed this was a case of a “cross drop,” where diesel was placed in the unleaded tank and unleaded in the diesel tank.

The Lorain County Weights and Measures Supervisor visited the station and confirmed the issue but noted that Ohio regulations only allow them to verify the accuracy of fuel quantities, not the fuel’s composition. Circle K claims the contaminated fuel was dispensed only on Jan. 19 and is currently reviewing claims from affected customers.

Annie’s Auto in Avon has already repaired one vehicle affected by the mix-up. The mechanic described the repair as relatively simple, involving flushing the gas tank and lines, replacing spark plugs, and running cleaner through the car. However, more severe cases, such as damage to catalytic converters, could result in repair costs exceeding $3,000.

Customers seeking reimbursement are encouraged to contact Circle K customer service at 1-855-276-1947 to file a claim.
