Cleveland Cavaliers Chase Historic NBA Season with 31-4 Start
CLEVELAND — The Cleveland Cavaliers are making history in the 2025 NBA season, boasting a 31-4 record through their first 35 games. This marks the fifth-best start in league history, tying them with legendary teams like the 2004-05 Phoenix Suns, 1996-97 Chicago Bulls, and 1980-81 Philadelphia 76ers.
The Cavaliers’ dominance was on full display Sunday in a 115-105 victory over the Charlotte Hornets, extending their winning streak to 10 games. Despite the final score, the game was never in doubt, as Cleveland led by double digits for most of the second half. The win also highlighted the team’s offensive firepower, as they currently rank second in NBA history in offensive efficiency, trailing only last season’s Boston Celtics.
Head coach Kenny Atkinson, however, remains cautious about the team’s historic pace. “Absolutely not,” Atkinson said when asked if he considers his squad one of the greatest teams ever. “We’re focused on improving every day and preparing for the playoffs.”
Guard Darius Garland echoed his coach’s sentiments, emphasizing that the regular season is merely a stepping stone. “Our next step is to go to the Eastern Conference finals, go to the finals,” Garland said after scoring 25 points against the Hornets. “The regular season is super cool, but it’s like a ramp-up for what we’re trying to get to.”
The Cavaliers’ success this season has been fueled by a balanced attack led by Donovan Mitchell, who is averaging 28.5 points per game, and Evan Mobley, who has taken a significant leap in his fourth season. Mobley, known for his defensive prowess, has expanded his offensive game, shooting 41.8% from 3-point range and increasing his usage rate in Atkinson’s up-tempo system.
Despite their regular-season dominance, questions remain about whether the Cavaliers can translate their success to the playoffs. Critics point to the team’s lack of postseason experience and the potential defensive limitations of the Mitchell-Garland backcourt. “I think they’re a really good regular-season team, but when the game slows down and is more targeted, I have some concerns,” an opposing assistant coach said.
The Cavaliers will face a major test Wednesday when they host the Oklahoma City Thunder, who are riding a 15-game winning streak. The matchup between the league’s top two teams could provide a glimpse into whether Cleveland is truly a championship contender.
As the Cavaliers continue their pursuit of history, the team remains focused on the ultimate goal: winning an NBA championship. “We don’t want 73,” said veteran Tristan Thompson, referencing the Golden State Warriors‘ record-setting 2015-16 season. “We want to win playoff games and bring a title to Cleveland.”
