Coaching Carousel Spins: Jon Gruden Open to College Football Return
Pittsburgh, PA
The coaching carousel in college football is picking up speed as October unfolds. This past weekend, several coaches joined the ranks of the unemployed, increasing the urgency for schools seeking new leadership.
One name generating buzz is Jon Gruden, the former NFL coach who expressed interest in returning to coaching at any level, including college. In a recent episode of his show, Gruden stated, “I absolutely love football. Who knows what will happen, but I’m preparing myself as always to coach. But, behind the scenes, we’re getting plenty of football. I promise you.”
Gruden, who coached five different NFL teams over nearly 30 years, last served as head coach of the Oakland Raiders from 2018 until 2021. He resigned following a controversial email scandal that tarnished his reputation. His coaching career in college dates back to 1991 when he was the tight ends coach for the Pittsburgh Panthers.
As the season progresses, more head coaching openings are expected, and Gruden’s name is likely to surface as a prominent candidate. Whether he will seize an opportunity to return to the sidelines remains uncertain.
