Coco Gauff Wuhan Open Final

WUHAN, China — Coco Gauff captured her second WTA 1000 title of the year on Sunday, defeating fellow American Jessica Pegula 6-4, 7-5 in the final of the Wuhan Open. Gauff’s strategic mastery and controlled aggression were on full display as she navigated the match with precision.

Entering the final, Gauff had not lost a single set throughout the tournament, affirming her dominance on hard courts. She showcased her ability to adapt her game plan against Pegula, a high-caliber opponent, displaying composure in critical moments. After winning the first set, Gauff faced adversity by dropping a break in the second but quickly regained her control with a series of powerful forehand shots.

During the match, Gauff’s use of varied shot techniques, including heavy topspin and slices, kept Pegula guessing. “I think that line of attack with the forehand today has been the real standout factor,” Sky Sports commentator Jonathan Overend said, adding that Gauff’s clever angles troubled Pegula’s rhythm.

Pegula, who previously showed resilience by defeating Aryna Sabalenka, struggled with both Gauff’s tactics and the cooler conditions in Wuhan. Leading 3-0 in the second set, Pegula momentarily faltered and couldn’t maintain her momentum against Gauff’s relentless pressure.

Despite generating multiple break opportunities, Pegula found it difficult to secure them against Gauff, who rattled off four consecutive games to conclude the match. Former British player Naomi Broady praised Gauff’s strategic depth and her intelligent shot selection that disrupted Pegula’s flow.

The victory marks the 11th title of Gauff’s career, further establishing her as a formidable player in women’s tennis. She will now turn her focus to the upcoming events, as the WTA season continues to unfold.
