Coco Gauff Set for Showdown Against Victoria Mboko in Rome

ROME, Italy — Coco Gauff will face Victoria Mboko in the second round of the 2025 Italian Open at Foro Italico on May 9. The match is scheduled to start not before 10 a.m. BST.
After a patchy start to the season, Gauff, 21, gained momentum with a runner-up finish at the Madrid Open. She beat highly-ranked opponents in that tournament, displaying her powerful forehand and net play, signaling her return to form ahead of the French Open.
“Finding my rhythm in Madrid was huge for me,” Gauff said. “I’m really looking forward to showing my best tennis in Rome.”
Gauff’s opponent, 18-year-old Victoria Mboko, has also been on an upward trajectory, as she recently qualified for the main draw after successful performances on the ITF circuit. She defeated Italy’s Arianna Zucchini in the first round, showcasing her explosive power.
“Playing against someone like Coco is exciting,” Mboko said. “I know I have to bring my best to compete.” Gauff’s experience and skills will be crucial as she aims for a dominant start against Mboko, who is still establishing herself at the elite level.
Both players will face a tough challenge, with Gauff asserting her formidable baseline game while Mboko will seek to counter with speed and strategy. Gauff is predicted to win in straight sets but knows not to underestimate her opponent.
This match not only serves as a test for both competitors but may also hint at a future rivalry in women’s tennis.
