LOS ANGELES, Feb. 10, 2025 — Colman Domingo, the acclaimed actor and producer, recently shed light on the swirling rumors about him potentially replacing Jonathan Majors as Kang the Conqueror in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). During an appearance on the “Happy Sad Confused” podcast, Domingo revealed that he met with Marvel executives amid the speculation.
Domingo’s flashing concern regarding the rumors arose when he saw discussions on social media platforms and in news articles. “When it was constantly in the press and on places like Twitter, I was like, ‘Wait a minute. Is this true? Am I being talked about for Kang?'” he said. “I literally called up my team and said, ‘Are you guys having conversations that I have no idea about?’ And they said no. ‘Are you guys being cagey or what?’ They weren’t.”
After these conversations, Domingo stated, “There had been conversations of me coming into Marvel in some way, so we did follow-up with a sit-down meeting with the heads of Marvel. I did do that.” He emphasized that the discussions centered around the broader landscape of Marvel and the rumors involving Kang, the character Majors originally portrayed.
Domingo made it clear his interest lies in creating a unique role rather than stepping into someone else’s shoes. He expressed, “Something didn’t feel right to me about replacing someone. I want to build something from the ground up that is my own.” This sentiment highlights his desire for artistic integrity in his career.
Rumors of Domingo stepping in for Majors escalated after Majors was let go by Marvel in December 2023 following a conviction for assault against his ex-girlfriend, Grace Jabbari. This incident led Marvel to rework its storyline, opting to introduce Doctor Doom, played by Robert Downey Jr., instead of finding a replacement for Kang.
Despite the heated buzz around the Kang role, Domingo clarified, “The idea of replacing Majors was never a conversation from my point of view. If I was discussed, I still don’t know if I was discussed.” He added that he is still in talks for a different potential role within the MCU, emphasizing his commitment to originality.
Domingo’s comments come in the wake of a significant shift in the MCU’s narrative direction, as the studio announced it would rename the planned “Avengers: The Kang Dynasty” to “Avengers: Doomsday.” His desire to contribute to the MCU aligns with his professional trajectory, which includes an Oscar nomination for his role in the film “Sing Sing.”
As the MCU continues to evolve, Domingo remains hopeful for collaboration with Marvel while asserting his preference for originality over replacement. He emphasized, “I want to build something from the ground up, so there still are talks.” Those interested can catch his full comments on the “Happy Sad Confused” podcast.
