Bobby Wagner Washington Commanders Playoff Game

ASHBURN, Va. — The Washington Commanders received a major boost ahead of their Divisional Round playoff game against the Detroit Lions as Hall of Fame linebacker Bobby Wagner was cleared to play despite an ankle injury. Wagner, who missed practices earlier in the week, is set to lead the Commanders’ defense in their most significant game in two decades.

Head coach Dan Quinn dismissed concerns about Wagner’s availability, stating, “No, he did a good job on the rehab part of it. He looks strong.” Wagner, a key emotional and statistical leader for the Commanders, recorded 132 tackles during the regular season and made a game-changing play in the Wild Card round by recovering a fumble that led to a crucial touchdown.

Wagner’s presence will be critical against a high-powered Lions offense that ranked second in yards per game and first in points during the regular season. “He is a rare competitor,” Quinn said. “So much of his success is unseen work. I’m in early. He’s already there. He’ll be the first one in tomorrow. I’m certain of it.”

The Commanders also received positive updates on kicker Zane Gonzalez, who overcame a hip issue to hit the game-winning field goal in the Wild Card round. However, linebacker Jordan Magee has been ruled out after re-injuring his hamstring, while Mykal Walker and Colson Yankoff remain questionable.

Washington’s defense will need to be at full strength to contain a Lions offense led by quarterback Jared Goff and a dynamic receiving corps. The Commanders are making their first Divisional Round appearance since 2005, and Wagner’s leadership will be pivotal in their quest to advance.
