Commanders Face Competition with Several Key Players Questionable for Week 7
The Washington Commanders have announced that key players, including defensive end Dorance Armstrong, will not participate in the Week 7 home game against the Carolina Panthers. Armstrong has been struggling with a rib injury that kept him out of practice throughout the week. This adds to the team’s defensive line challenges, which already face the season-long absence of Pro Bowl tackle Jonathan Allen due to a torn pectoral muscle. Moreover, rookie defensive end Javontae Jean-Baptiste is on Injured Reserve.
To reinforce their defensive front, the Commanders have signed defensive tackle Sheldon Day from their practice squad. In addition, Jalyn Holmes, a 2018 fourth-round draft pick with substantial experience, has been added to the active roster.
Head coach Dan Quinn expressed hope that Armstrong’s injury is not long-term and acknowledged his importance to the team’s defensive strategy. Armstrong leads the squad with 20 total pressures, including 11 hurries and five quarterback hits, according to Pro Football Focus.
On the offensive side, the Commanders could benefit from Brian Robinson Jr.’s expected return. Robinson missed the previous game against the Ravens due to a knee injury. He appeared improved in practice this week and remains listed as questionable. Coach Quinn noted Robinson had a strong week of practice, and offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury emphasized his pivotal role within the team, highlighting his emotional and physical contributions.
Several offensive players, including wide receiver Noah Brown, guard Nick Allegretti, and center Tyler Biadasz, are expected to play despite appearing on the injury report. However, safety Tyler Owens, struggling with a shin injury, will miss his third consecutive game. Defensive end Clelin Ferrell is questionable with a knee injury.
Linebacker Jordan Magee, returning from injured reserve, has participated fully in practice but remains listed as questionable. The Commanders need to make a decision soon as the 21-day window for Magee’s return to the active roster is closing fast. If not activated, Magee will have to remain on IR for the season.
Overall, for the Commanders, gaining full strength on offense could be a crucial factor as they strive to counter the Panthers’ formidable line-up in this upcoming match-up.
