The Indian National Congress has distanced itself from the controversial remarks made by senior leader Mani Shankar Aiyar in an old interview, which resurfaced recently and triggered a debate. In the interview, Aiyar suggested that India should engage in dialogue with Pakistan to prevent potential nuclear conflict. However, the Congress party clarified that Aiyar’s views from several months ago do not reflect the party’s official stance.

Responding to the criticism from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Congress spokesperson Pawan Khera countered by sharing an old video of External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar. In the video, Jaishankar emphasized the importance of avoiding confrontation with China, citing the country’s status as a major economy.

Pawan Khera took to social media to express the Congress’s disapproval of Aiyar’s remarks and highlighted the party’s divergence from the sentiments expressed in the old interview. The BJP, however, seized upon Aiyar’s comments to criticize the Congress, portraying it as sympathetic towards Pakistan and terrorism emanating from the neighboring country.

The political exchange over Aiyar’s comments underscores the ongoing tensions between the Congress and the BJP, with the latter accusing the former of weakening India’s stance on national security. Prime Minister Narendra Modi‘s recent assertions about India’s counter-terrorism measures were also referenced in the context of the debate.
