Corey O’Connor Wins Democratic Primary for Pittsburgh Mayor

PITTSBURGH, Pa. — Corey O’Connor has been projected as the winner of the Democratic primary for Pittsburgh mayor, defeating incumbent Ed Gainey. The announcement was made shortly before 11 p.m. on election night.
O’Connor, Allegheny County Controller, expressed his gratitude to his supporters during a victory speech at Nova Place, stating, “Your voices and your calls for accountable leadership and growth have been heard.” He emphasized plans to address the city’s financial challenges and enhance public safety.
Meanwhile, Mayor Gainey held a watch party in the South Side, where he acknowledged his loss. He encouraged his supporters not to lose hope but to continue the movement he fostered during his tenure. “We’ve built a multiracial, multi-generational movement,” he said, reflecting on the campaign’s achievements.
In discussing his plans, O’Connor highlighted the need for a new police chief and a commitment to transparent governance. He affirmed he would work closely with residents to make Pittsburgh a place where families feel secure.
On the Republican ticket, Tony Moreno also declared victory over Thomas West in his primary race. Moreno, a retired police officer, focused on issues of accountability and public safety in his victory remarks, noting his desire to restore pride in the city’s law enforcement.
With the November election on the horizon, both O’Connor and Moreno are preparing for a competitive general election, marking a pivotal moment for Pittsburgh’s leadership.
