San Diego, California – CJ Fodrey, a local soccer star from Coronado, returned to San Diego as part of the Austin FC roster for a match against San Diego Football Club (SDFC) on May 31. The game took place at Snapdragon Stadium, where Fodrey’s loyal supporters filled the stands.

Fodrey, a 2022 graduate, started his soccer career with Nado Select and progressed through various clubs including Albion, Surf, and Loyal. His hard work led him to San Diego State University and eventually to a professional contract with Austin FC.

SDFC, in its inaugural season, is currently ranked second in the MLS Western Conference. The team had just secured a victory against LA Galaxy, increasing interest in the match with over 27,000 fans in attendance, many of whom came to cheer for the hometown hero.

During the second half, fans erupted in cheers when Fodrey entered the game, bringing a surge of excitement to the Austin FC bench. At the time, Austin was trailing 1-0, but Fodrey made efforts to spark opportunities for his team. However, SDFC controlled most of the game and eventually won 2-0 against Austin FC.

After the match, Fodrey expressed his emotions about playing at Snapdragon Stadium. ‘It felt great, it was a full circle moment for me to play at Snapdragon Stadium in San Diego in front of all my friends and family. It is a blessing, it’s always been my dream to play soccer professionally,’ he said.

Fodrey also shared thoughts about living in Austin, saying, ‘Austin is very nice, and has grown on me. Though it isn’t San Diego, it’s been a for sure second home to me.’

After the game, fans rushed to the field to connect with Fodrey, capturing memories with selfies and jerseys. His mother, Natasha, was present at the game, expressing her pride and emotional connection to CJ’s journey.

Mike Foulks, an SDFC superfan, reflected on the significance of Fodrey’s accomplishment. His son, Ben, played alongside CJ in San Diego. ‘Even though we are SDFC fans, we went crazy when we saw CJ report into the game,’ he said, emphasizing the bond formed through years of dedication to the sport.

Foulks praised the hard work that local athletes put into their development and expressed joy in witnessing Fodrey’s rise. ‘Of course, these emotions skyrocket if they get drafted and even crack pro lineups! Our team won in the end, but, if CJ had scored against us to make it more respectable, we would have lost our minds! Because, after all, he’s one of ours!’

As the interview concluded, Fodrey offered advice to aspiring soccer players, saying, ‘I would tell them to stay focused on their dreams. Stay positive and consistent. Know that no one’s path is the same, so just trust the process and keep working hard.’
