Costco Tightens Membership Rules In Canada

Costco is making some changes in Canada, especially for those who like to borrow membership cards from friends and family. The big-box retailer is testing out new membership card scanning systems at its store entrances in cities like Ottawa, Edmonton, Regina, and parts of British Columbia.

Starting now, members will be required to scan their membership card, whether it’s digital or physical, to enter the store. If your card doesn’t have your photo, don’t forget to bring a photo ID as well!

While guests can still join a member for shopping, they can only enter if accompanied by a valid member. This new scanning approach aims to curb those who might misuse other people’s membership cards.

Costco’s move comes as they prepare to raise membership fees next month—up by $5 for regular and business members and $10 for executive members. A company representative noted that they are not sure yet if this new scanning system will be rolled out to all locations across Canada.

Previously, an employee would check memberships at the door, but now scanning is the way forward. There will still be attendants on hand to help with any issues that might come up, ensuring that shoppers have a smooth experience in the store.

This adjustment aligns with the growing trend of membership programs cracking down on unwanted access, similar to actions taken recently by streaming services.
