Critics Mock Stephen Miller’s Praise for Trump’s Economic Strategy

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Critics quickly reacted on social media Thursday to Stephen Miller’s enthusiastic defense of President Donald Trump’s recent economic maneuvers, which included a temporary halt to tariffs that had sent stocks plummeting. Miller characterized this shift as part of a masterful economic strategy, a description that many found laughable.
In a tweet, Miller stated, “You have been watching the greatest economic master strategy from an American President in history.” This post was met with immediate backlash from users across various platforms, who condemned the statement as “extremely stupid” and indicative of a lack of understanding of the current situation.
Trump’s announcement earlier this week to pause the proposed tariffs, which had fueled market fears and led to sharp declines in stock values, sparked a minor rally in the markets. However, this reversal raised eyebrows, with some critics suggesting it indicated that Trump was unsure of his economic direction.
Political commentator Amy McGrath replied to Miller, “Start fire. Put out fire. Declare a great victory. Repeat,” underscoring her view that Trump was attempting to save face following a self-created dilemma.
Others echoed similar sentiments. David Hogg remarked, “This tweet will not age well,” while Josh Klemons added, “Literally incapable of rolling my eyes harder,” reflecting a widespread skepticism regarding Miller’s claims of economic genius.
Some reactions were more critical, with Yassamin Ansari saying, “You’re destroying people’s life savings with no thought whatsoever, causing global economic instability, and when the nonexistent strategy fails… retreating. Americans are smarter than this.”
The criticism extended beyond individual comments. Gabriel Cornejo, a 2024 Presidential Candidate, accused Trump of making a “massive mistake” with the tariffs and argued that Miller’s statements were an attempt to protect Trump’s image in light of the failing strategy.
In a humorous twist, comedian Seth Meyers also commented on the situation, describing Trump’s Cabinet meeting as a “ritualistic puckering of the lips and kissing of the buttocks,” suggesting that the excessive praise directed at Trump by his officials pointed to a need for reassurance amid criticism.
Meyers pointed out, “When your staff goes that over the top with praise, that’s how you know you messed up.” He noted that even Trump appeared uncomfortable with the meeting and the fervor of compliments surrounding him.
As this public dialogue unfolds, Trump’s economic decisions continue to be a focal point of contention, raising questions about leadership and strategy during a time of uncertainty.
