Cruise Passenger Arrested in Aruba for Attempting to Board with Firearm

ORANJESTAD, Aruba — A passenger was arrested on February 26 after attempting to board the Royal Caribbean cruise ship Oasis of the Seas with a firearm during routine security screenings at the port of Aruba.
The incident occurred while the ship was docked, prompting quick action from both the vessel’s security team and local law enforcement. Security personnel discovered a revolver in the possession of a male passenger, triggering established security protocols that led to the individual’s arrest.
Aruba authorities have initiated an investigation to determine how the passenger obtained the firearm. Questions remain about whether he purchased it in Aruba or brought it from Florida, where the cruise originated. This distinction could significantly impact any legal charges he may face.
Upon his detention, Aruba police took the passenger for questioning. Forensic experts documented the weapon with photographs before seizing it as evidence, a standard procedure for such cases.
“Firearm regulations pose significant challenges in international travel,” said a spokesperson for Royal Caribbean. “Our policy clearly states that no firearms are allowed onboard to ensure the safety of our passengers and crew.”
Enforcing these policies can be complicated due to varying firearm laws in different countries. The cruise line strictly prohibits firearms on their vessels, but incidents like this indicate ongoing compliance challenges.
While authorities have not disclosed the passenger’s identity or potential charges, the situation remains under investigation. Despite the incident, the Oasis of the Seas continued its scheduled voyage, emphasizing cruise companies’ commitment to minimizing disruptions during travel.
This occurrence marks the second case of a passenger attempting to board a Royal Caribbean ship with a firearm in the past year, following a similar incident in Grand Turk.
According to Royal Caribbean’s website, the company maintains a strict no-firearm policy, not allowing any guest, including off-duty law enforcement, to bring weapons onboard. Passengers are advised to leave firearms at home or arrange safe storage through local authorities.
The cruise ship is currently on an eight-night roundtrip itinerary from Fort Lauderdale, Florida, and is set to return to Port Everglades on March 2 after stops at various Caribbean destinations, including the Perfect Day at CocoCay in The Bahamas.
