Cruz Azul Faces Tough Decisions with Star Players Amid Transfer Rumors

CIUDAD DE MÉXICO, México (AP) — The negotiations surrounding forward Roberto Alvarado have intensified as fans express concern over his potential departure from Cruz Azul. The 2021 Novena standout, who was part of a controversial deal involving Chivas de Guadalajara, is now reportedly a target for Tigres UANL as the upcoming season approaches.
According to El Universal, Tigres plans to make a substantial offer to Chivas and Cruz Azul, as both clubs share ownership of Alvarado’s rights. With Alvarado struggling to replicate his peak performance this season—having netted just three goals and providing two assists in the current Torneo Clausura 2025—Tigres aims to capitalize on what they view as a low point in his career.
“The Tigres management is captivated by Alvarado’s skill and ability to disrupt defenses,” the report indicated. Meanwhile, Chivas remains reluctant to let him go, fearing a decrease in his market value if sold to a rival club.
In another twist, the Monterrey-based club Rayados had previously expressed interest in acquiring Alvarado, attempting to negotiate a trade involving Jordi Cortizo, alongside cash, to convince Chivas owner Amaury Vergara. On the market, Alvarado’s worth has fluctuated; currently valued at approximately €7.5 million, his price was previously set at $16 million following a contract extension that secured his services through 2029.
Some fans are questioning how long Chivas can maintain their hold on Alvarado amidst rising interest from other teams. It remains uncertain whether they will budge in negotiations, given the stakes involved.
In contrast, former Chivas forward José Juan Macías is facing a challenging personal and professional moment. After leaving Guadalajara for Santos Laguna, his contract was terminated early due to injuries, leaving him sidelined and reevaluating his future amidst speculation regarding a potential retirement at just 25 years old.
Recovering in the United States from a lingering knee injury, Macías recently expressed his determination to continue pursuing his career. “I have been unable to play for three years due to surgeries and tears. It’s exhausting to have expectations about playing when you know you can’t deliver,” he shared in an interview with ESPN.
While Cruz Azul’s management and fans are keenly watching the situation unfold, the club recently faced backlash from supporters regarding an inaccessible friendly match against Club León, which was not broadcasted through any media channels. The game saw promising performances, notably from young talent Luka Romero, whose goal brought excitement to the encounter.
The friendly’s omission from broadcasts highlights a broader issue in how exhibition matches are managed, especially during an active season. Fans and pundits alike have criticized the decision, voicing disappointment over the lack of access to the team’s performances.
As the Liga MX prepares for an upcoming FIFA break, Cruz Azul’s fanbase remains anxiously contemplating the implications of potential player trades and team dynamics while hoping for clarity on Macías’ future and Alvarado’s status.
