CSK Signs Urvil Patel After Vansh Bedi Injury Ahead of IPL 2025 Matches

CHENNAI, India – Chennai Super Kings (CSK) announced on May 5, 2025, that they have signed wicketkeeper-batter Urvil Patel as a replacement for the injured Vansh Bedi. Bedi is out for the remainder of the Indian Premier League (IPL) season due to a ligament tear in his left ankle.
Patel joins CSK for a base price of INR 30 lakh. The 26-year-old from Gujarat has played 47 T20 matches, amassing 1,162 runs. He previously played for the Gujarat Titans during the 2023 IPL season.
Urvil Patel gained attention in domestic cricket when he scored a remarkable 28-ball century against Tripura in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, matching the record for the fastest T20 century by an Indian. He followed that with a 35-ball 113, which included 12 sixes and seven fours.
Despite an unsuccessful bid in the IPL mega auction held in Saudi Arabia, Patel’s impressive performances in domestic tournaments have positioned him as a promising addition for CSK. He is known for his explosive batting style and has made headlines with his scoring ability.
CSK is currently at the bottom of the IPL 2025 points table, having secured only four points from 11 matches. The team is looking to rebound from their recent struggles, which include losing their last four matches.
MS Dhoni, CSK’s head coach, noted the significance of Patel’s arrival. “We’re excited to have Urvil on board. His recent performances indicate that he has the talent and the temperament to succeed at this level,” Dhoni said.
In a significant shift, CSK has also made changes due to injuries. Ruturaj Gaikwad, originally the captain, was sidelined due to a hairline fracture. This led to Dhoni stepping up as the interim captain.
As CSK prepares for their next match against the Kolkata Knight Riders on May 7, support from fans remains critical in this challenging season. The franchise aims to rebuild and integrate new talents like Patel to lay a stronger foundation for future seasons.
