Cubs Stun Diamondbacks with Insane Comeback in Historic Game

CHICAGO — The Chicago Cubs pulled off a remarkable comeback on Friday, defeating the Arizona Diamondbacks 13-11 in a game that featured an unprecedented scoring onslaught during the final two innings at Wrigley Field. Trailing 11-7 after a disastrous top of the eighth, the Cubs rallied to score six runs in the bottom half of the inning, marking a rare feat in Major League Baseball history.
In an astonishing display of resilience, the Cubs and Diamondbacks combined for 21 runs during the seventh and eighth innings. This is now the first game in MLB history where both teams scored 10 or more runs in the seventh inning on, according to ESPN Research.
“That’s kind of baseball,” Cubs infielder Tucker remarked after the game. “There’s a lot of ups and downs, especially with how many games we play, but this was something else.”
The Cubs made a historic mark by becoming just the seventh team in the last 125 seasons to allow ten or more runs in an inning and still emerge victorious. They are also the fifth team to achieve the rare combination of giving up ten runs and scoring six in the same inning.
“If you’ve seen that one, you’ve been around for a while,” said Cubs manager Craig Counsell, laughing as he reflected on the wild turn of events. “It was crazy. We kept going, and you know, there are 27 outs in a game, and that kind of proves it.”
The action-packed eighth inning saw the Cubs bounce back after their bullpen had previously surrendered ten runs to the Diamondbacks. Arizona took a 7-5 lead with a grand slam by Kelly followed by a two-run double, pushing their total to eleven. However, the Cubs regrouped and delivered a fierce response.
Cubs outfielder Ian Happ, who contributed significantly with a grand slam earlier in the game, praised the team’s determination: “You can’t let the previous game affect how you approach the next at-bat. It’s about being professional hitters.”
With the crowd of over 39,000 roaring in celebration, the Cubs opened their weekend series on a high note. They had previously managed to maintain a stiff upper lip despite a difficult start to the season, which included several tough losses.
Kelly and Tucker stood out with powerful performances, each hitting crucial home runs during the game. “You’ve got to stay locked in,” Kelly said post-game. “It’s all about regrouping after a tough inning.”
On the injury front, the Diamondbacks suffered a setback as relief pitcher Puk was placed on the 15-day injured list due to left elbow inflammation, adding to the struggles of their beleaguered bullpen. Puk, who had a 3.38 ERA with four saves this season, is expected to undergo an MRI next week.
As the Diamondbacks regroup from their wild defeat, both teams are set to face off again in the remaining games of their series, looking to build off their respective performances from this unforgettable encounter.
