Dallas Cowboys Gear Up for Free Agency Decisions

FRISCO, TX — As the Dallas Cowboys approach free agency, pivotal decisions loom regarding the team’s roster, particularly at linebacker and along the defensive line.
The recent signing of Osa Odighizuwa, ensuring he won’t hit the open market, brings both stability and clarity to the Cowboys’ interior defensive line. The deal, which reportedly includes more than $50 million in guaranteed money, fortifies a crucial position. Odighizuwa, 24, is seen as a cornerstone for the team’s defense moving forward.
In the wake of Odighizuwa’s contract, the attention shifts to the linebacker position, which has been jeopardized by injuries. Star linebacker Micah Parsons is expected to play a primary pass-rushing role, as emphasized by defensive line coach Aaron Whitecotton. Meanwhile, the potential loss of DeMarvion Overshown to a significant knee injury in the latest season creates a pressing need for depth at the position.
Veteran Eric Kendricks emerges as a leading candidate for re-signing. He served as a stabilizing force during the 2024 season, showcasing exceptional mentorship for younger linebackers such as Marist Liufau and Overshown. Kendricks is expected to command a salary near $7 million, which aligns with the team’s budget considerations.
A plethora of unrestricted free agent linebackers, including Bobby Wagner and Jamien Sherwood, could also enhance the core. Wagner, a future Hall of Famer, has proven his capability in 2024 with the Commanders. However, his expected price tag presents a challenge for Dallas.
Additionally, Darius Harris and Nick Vigil, who have shown promise filling in as rotational players, could remain viable low-cost options depending on the team’s plans.
As of March 13, several other defensive linemen will be available, including Haason Reddick and Azeez Ojulari. However, cost concerns may complicate potential signings as the Cowboys look to manage their cap space efficiently.
In the secondary, discussions are well underway with Jourdan Lewis, who had an impressive 2024 season but was notably overlooked in Pro Bowl selections. His contributions as the best nickel corner in the league cannot be overstated, and retaining him is a priority.
The team must also assess its cornerback depth and potentially explore options like Jonathan Jones and Nate Hobbs, both of whom may offer versatile defensive support. These decisions are complicated by the projected salaries of these potential additions—ranging from $3.5 million to $5 million per year.
As the Cowboys navigate these off-season challenges, the balance between maintaining a competitive roster while adhering to salary cap limitations becomes increasingly critical. The outcome of their free agency strategy will significantly impact their pursuit of a championship in the 2025 season.
