FRISCO, Texas – The Dallas Cowboys have made significant changes to their roster over the past two months, adding nearly 30 new players through free agent signings, draft picks, undrafted free agents, and trades.

This overhaul accounts for a third of the team’s 90-man roster since mid-March, leading to shifts in various positions ahead of the upcoming season. With the first preseason game scheduled for August, the Cowboys have yet to finalize a depth chart.

The running back position is particularly intriguing, with no clear frontrunner. Only Jaydon Blue, a fifth-round pick, can be considered somewhat secure in his roster spot, and even that is not guaranteed. The Cowboys have not promised any players starting positions, leaving room for competition.

Veteran running backs such as Sanders and Williams bring experience that could earn them top roles in the lineup. New running backs coach Derrick Foster has plenty to work with as he enters his first season with the Cowboys.

One player to watch is Deuce Vaughn, who is entering his third season without making a significant impact. With the addition of two drafted running backs, Vaughn must demonstrate that he is ready to step up. His reunion with offensive line coach Conor Riley, who was his coordinator at Kansas State, may be beneficial.

The Cowboys are also focusing on speed at running back. Jaydon Blue showcased his speed during the draft, clocking in the second-fastest 40-yard dash for running backs at 4.38 seconds. His addition brings a speed element the team has lacked since Tony Pollard.

Additionally, the team is looking for versatility in their running backs, as Sanders and Williams have both caught 50 passes in previous seasons. Blue also has a track record, catching two touchdown passes in the College Football Playoff semifinals. The Cowboys want more than just traditional runners in their backfield.

With the ongoing changes, the Cowboys are set to continue their evaluation as they prepare for the upcoming season.
