Dalton Knecht Navigates Whirlwind Trade Drama with Lakers

Los Angeles, CA – In the midst of a rollercoaster week, Lakers rookie Dalton Knecht has faced significant upheaval in his NBA career. After being part of trade discussions with the Charlotte Hornets, he ultimately rejoined the Lakers just in time for a crucial game against the Jazz on February 10.
Knecht’s emotional journey began when the Lakers considered trading him to acquire Hornets center Mark Williams. However, when Williams failed his physical, the deal collapsed, leaving Knecht to grapple with the uncertainty of his role on the team.
Before facing the Jazz, Knecht requested not to play, a decision acknowledged by Lakers head coach JJ Redick. “He has, obviously, been through a whirlwind of emotion as a rookie over the last few days,” Redick stated. “We believe in the strength of the group and having him around today. … He is, obviously, processing everything that has happened.”
Despite the turmoil, Knecht showed resilience in the Lakers’ recent game against the Clippers. Redick informed him that he would not be part of the rotation; however, Knecht remained ready for any opportunity. He contributed 8 points, 1 rebound, and 1 assist in 18 minutes, helping the Lakers secure a 106-102 victory. Redick praised Knecht’s professionalism, noting, “That’s a professional basketball player right there. That was big time, Dalton. That was big time.”
Since returning to the court, Knecht has logged 74 minutes across six games, scoring 20 points. His statistics may not reflect his potential, especially compared to his brief stint with the Hornets, but he remains focused on maximizing his opportunities.
After opting to sit out against the Jazz, Knecht returned just two days later, finishing with 10 points, including 3-of-7 shooting, in a close contest. Reflecting on his experience, he remarked, “It was a crazy time. It felt like a movie. It was hard. I got drafted here, so L.A. means a lot.”
Moving forward, Knecht finds himself in a unique situation, playing alongside superstars like LeBron James and Luka Doncic. He aims to prove his worth to the Lakers and show the Hornets what they missed out on.
As of now, Knecht is averaging 8.8 points, 2.9 rebounds, and 0.8 assists per game over 55 games. With an increase in minutes expected, many anticipate an uptick in his performance. His professionalism and readiness may soon result in standout performances that reflect his true potential.
Meanwhile, JJ Redick has garnered praise for his coaching since taking the helm of the Lakers, helping the team win five straight games and positioning them for a playoff spot as the fourth seed in the Western Conference with a 37-21 record. Some analysts, including ESPN’s Kendrick Perkins, argue that Redick should be a top candidate for Coach of the Year due to the Lakers’ notable turnaround.
The Lakers boast the best defensive metrics in the league, a remarkable feat considering their previous roster changes. Redick’s influence has certainly played a crucial role in this success, proving he can guide the team even in the face of injuries to key players like Austin Reaves and Rui Hachimura.
