Dana Perino Shares Secrets to a Busy Life in New Book

NEW YORK, NY – Dana Perino, the 52-year-old host of Fox News programs, balances an array of activities each day, attributing her success to advice and insights gained throughout her career. In her upcoming book, “I Wish Someone Had Told Me …” set for release on April 22, Perino shares her journey from serving as President George W. Bush‘s press secretary to becoming a prominent television personality.
Perino, who wakes up promptly at 4:43 a.m., credits her structured morning routine for her productivity. Following a brief period for meditation or prayer, she turns her attention to breaking news—frequently from the Trump administration—before diving into exercise. Her regimen includes cycling on her Peloton bike and integrating strength training or yoga into her mornings. “You have to keep moving,” she emphasizes, noting that diet and exercise are prominent themes of her memoir.
Once ready for the day, Perino hosts “Newsroom” alongside Bill Hemmer, where she actively engages with her audience and sources. “In the news hour, I’m asking questions and trying to get sources to provide something interesting,” she explained.
Throughout her busy day, she pursues private Pilates sessions or takes ballroom dancing classes between show preparations. “Even when life gets crowded, I find time to connect with friends or tune into podcasts,” Perino said, demonstrating her commitment to staying informed and connected.
After a hectic day, Perino returns home to a routine that focuses on healthy living. She and her husband, businessman Peter McMahon, prioritize home-cooked meals over takeout, even in the bustling atmosphere of New York City. “We never order in,” Perino remarked, adding a light-hearted note about her role in the kitchen. They spend their evenings watching television and selecting outfits for the next day.
Her bedtime routine focuses on winding down, with Perino typically reading novels—currently, she is engrossed in Jojo Moyes’ latest work. She aims for sleep by 9:30 p.m., striving to limit screen time. “I try not to check my phone too much before bed,” she admitted.
Perino’s social media habits reflect her drive to connect across generations. She manages her Instagram usage to a maximum of two hours daily, planning to reduce it further. While she engages with audiences on TikTok, she recognizes the diverse viewership of “The Five,” stating, “There are families across generations who watch together. It’s a unifying experience.”
In her book, Perino delves into what truly matters in life, emphasizing the importance of community engagement over societal divisions. “I actually believe we’re not as polarized in practice as we talk about in media,” she said, positing that communities often come together better than perceived.
Looking ahead, Perino seeks more time to continue her ambitions. “I would buy anyone’s extra minutes if they were selling them,” she said. Time is the ultimate equalizer, according to her perspective.
As she reflects on her own journey, Perino remains optimistic about future possibilities and the potential to impact others through her story.
