Daniel Rodriguez Prepares for Key Fight against Santiago Ponzinibbio in Iowa

DES MOINES, Iowa — Daniel Rodriguez, at 38, is set to face veteran Santiago Ponzinibbio this Saturday at Wells Fargo Arena, marking a vital moment in his UFC career.
Currently on a two-fight winless streak, Rodriguez finds himself needing a victory to secure his standing in the welterweight division. After competing on Dana White’s Contender Series, he achieved an impressive 8-1 record on the regional scene but was the only fighter from his week to leave without a contract.
“I’m on the crazy-a** journey that I never thought I would be on, so every day, I’m blessed to be here,” Rodriguez said from his hotel room. Reflecting on his journey, he added, “The way it all worked out, it’s like a movie.”
Rodriguez, known as ‘D-Rod’, has established himself as a reliable fighter in the UFC, remaining ready to face any opponent regardless of the challenges. However, a failed drug test in 2023 that resulted in a six-month suspension added pressure to this weekend’s re-scheduled fight. “I have so much to make up for,” he acknowledged.
In October, Rodriguez faced Alex Morono, a match he considered crucial for his future in the sport. After securing a unanimous decision victory, Rodriguez expressed the urgency for success in the upcoming bout against Ponzinibbio. “This fight means so much to me because I have so much lined up behind it; I have so much s*** planned,” he explained.
On the other hand, Ponzinibbio, a seasoned fighter, presents a formidable challenge. Rodriguez intends to start strong and utilize improved footwork to stay ahead. “He’s not a high combination striker,” Rodriguez assessed, promising to take control of the match.
As anticipation builds for the fight, Rodriguez’s focus extends beyond just winning. He views this match as a chance to pave the way towards securing his future both inside and outside the Octagon. “I’m gonna go out there on Saturday and fight for that future,” he said confidently.
Fans can catch the live action from Wells Fargo Arena on May 3, 2025, with prelims starting at 7 PM ET and the main card at 10 PM ET.
