INDIANAPOLIS — A piece of television history is now accessible to fans and travelers alike. David Letterman’s childhood home at 5520 Indianola Ave. in Broad Ripple is listed on Airbnb, offering guests the chance to stay where the iconic late-night host grew up.
Current owner Krystin Wiggs emphasizes the family-oriented nature of the residence, describing it as a “normal family bungalow that was well-lived and loved.” From the exterior, the home blends in with the neighborhood, but Wiggs notes its unique stories unfold once inside.
Letterman, known for hosting “Late Night with David Letterman” and “The Late Show with David Letterman,” was raised in Indianapolis. He attended Ball State University and left a significant mark on television history. When Wiggs learned the home was for sale, she was eager to take ownership. “He is a part of our history,” Wiggs said. “We’re really proud of him. He made it to the big time and hosted a really amazing show that people enjoyed for so many years.”
Wiggs aims to provide more than just accommodations; she wants guests to experience Letterman’s early life in Broad Ripple. “I would love for it to feel like a museum,” she said. The living room features memorabilia, including images of celebrities who appeared on “The Late Show.” “I want it to feel like you’re sitting in there,” she added, referencing the ambiance of the Ed Sullivan Theater.
To enhance the home’s cultural value, Wiggs commissioned local artists to create works that highlight Letterman’s passions. A mural by Leah Pinney in the basement illustrates Letterman’s connection to Ball State University, featuring its bell tower and bright cardinals. On the porch, artist Amiah Mims crafted a mural showcasing Letterman’s love for racing, depicting him in a racing context.
Mike Griffith, the first guest to stay at the home, traveled from Washington, D.C. He noted, “The mural on the back was pretty cool. It was cool to be in the kitchen, knowing that his mom was probably making him lunch or dinner when he was a kid.”
The property hosts memorabilia from Letterman’s family, including black-and-white photos of young Letterman playing in the yard and Dorothy Letterman’s bestselling cookbook, available for guests to browse.
The charming three-bedroom, two-bath bungalow can accommodate six guests and rents for $200 a night on Airbnb, with a two-night minimum stay. Pets are also welcome.
Reflecting on the significance of the property, Wiggs stated, “I think David is an example of someone who came from a normal background and went on to create a really special career and legacy for himself. I think he represents what’s special about Indiana, showing the rest of the world that Hoosiers are nice, humble people, but we do cool things, too.”
Whether for diehard Letterman fans or curious travelers, David Letterman’s childhood home presents a rare opportunity to engage with television history all while enjoying a stay in Broad Ripple.
