Davita Dialysis Center Cybersecurity Breach

April 14, 2025 – DENVER, Colo. – DaVita Inc. announced Monday it was targeted by a ransomware attack over the weekend, resulting in the encryption of parts of its network and lingering disruptions to its operations. Despite these challenges, the kidney care provider reassured patients that care continues at its facilities.

The cyberattack was detected on Saturday, prompting the company to activate its response protocols. In a regulatory filing, DaVita specified the attack has affected certain systems while other operations have been limited. The company stated it is working with third-party cybersecurity experts to assess the full impact of the breach.

“At this time, we cannot estimate the duration or extent of the disruption,” DaVita described in its filing. In response, the organization has implemented measures to isolate affected systems from its network, aiming to contain the incident.

DaVita operates nearly 3,000 outpatient clinics across the United States and serves about 200,000 patients annually, according to the company’s annual report. Additionally, it provides dialysis services in approximately 760 hospitals.

This incident highlights a growing concern within the U.S. healthcare sector, which has seen an increase in cyberattacks. Earlier in 2023, a unit of DaVita’s competitor, Fresenius Medical Care, suffered a breach that compromised data for around 500,000 patients.

The ongoing threat of ransomware is evident; in 2022, UnitedHealth Group‘s technology division experienced a significant attack that compromised the personal information of 100 million individuals and severely impacted its health insurance operations.

While DaVita has not confirmed whether any patient data has been stolen, the nature of ransomware attacks often leads to stolen data being used for extortion. As part of the company’s ongoing efforts, they have notified law enforcement about the recent breach.

DaVita aims to communicate transparently with its patients and stakeholders as the investigation progresses. Currently, there have been no public announcements on its website or social media channels regarding specific disruptions experienced at its clinics.

“We have implemented our contingency plans and are prioritizing patient care during this challenging time,” a DaVita spokesperson stated.
