Death Of A Unicorn Movie A24 Screening

LOS ANGELES, Calif. — The latest offering from A24, titled Death of a Unicorn, combines dark humor with a modern fantasy narrative, featuring Jenna Ortega and Paul Rudd as a daughter and father duo who accidentally run over a unicorn. The film, which opens March 28, was presented at a special screening on March 21, followed by a Q&A with director Alex Scharfman and members of the cast.

Set against the backdrop of absurdity, Death of a Unicorn explores the clash between a whimsical yet destructive creature and a group of affluent characters alongside a well-meaning single father. Rudd portrays the father who grapples with raising his daughter, played by Ortega, as they navigate life with the unicorn they inadvertently struck.

During the post-screening discussion, Ortega reflected on the challenges of her role. “Keeping a straight face was my hardest task,” she admitted, noting that scenes often revolved around her co-stars’ eccentric performances. “I really couldn’t trust anyone on this set. I couldn’t make eye contact with anybody,” she joked, recounting a moment involving cast member Anthony Carrigan using a clock to symbolize indecision. “I never looked in that direction during the takes.”

Ortega’s character, Ridley, serves as the film’s moral anchor, often expressing concern about the chaotic events surrounding the unicorn. “It was a challenging role where I needed to portray seriousness while my co-stars played off comedy. I felt like I was talking to a brick wall,” she explained. “The intensity grew daily; I was on the verge of tears many times.”

The rapport between Ortega and Rudd contributed significantly to their characters’ relationship. “Paul was fantastic to work with,” she said. “I admired his body of work, and he turned out to be such a kind person. It was great to build chemistry with him.” With a lighthearted tone, she added, “He was hell, though. Since he’s not here, I can admit he’s a bit of a dick.”

Despite the demanding nature of her role, Ortega appeared enthusiastic about the collaborative environment. “He was so easy to work with, making it easier to balance our roles. I had a lot of fun finding that rhythm,” she stated. “Paul’s support made it altogether a rewarding experience.”

As audiences gear up for Death of a Unicorn, the anticipation is palpable. The film promises a unique blend of dark comedy and fantasy, showcasing A24’s distinctive storytelling approach.
