PARIS, France — Ousmane Dembélé fired Paris Saint-Germain to a commanding 2-0 lead against Brest in the first leg of their Champions League playoff on Tuesday, February 11, 2025. Dembélé, who has already surpassed his previous season best of 14 goals, now has over 20 goals this season, showcasing his remarkable progression in form.
The match, crucial for both teams as they vie for a place in the knockout stage of the prestigious tournament, saw PSG dominate throughout. Dembélé’s performance, which included two expertly taken goals, created an ominous atmosphere for Brest, who now face an uphill battle in the return leg.
“Before this season, Ousmane Dembélé’s season best goal tally was 14,” noted Kári Tulinius, highlighting the player’s significant improvement. “He’s well past 20 already this season. I can’t think of many other players who’ve both been teenage wonders and late bloomers.”
For Brest, the result was particularly disappointing as they hoped to make their mark in the playoffs, ideally facing a foreign opponent. A solid performance was required to maintain their position in the league standings and push for European competition next season.
In other Champions League action, Juventus prepared to host PSV Eindhoven in Turin. After breaking a winless streak with decisive victories over Empoli and Como, Juventus was eager to build momentum. New signing Randal Kolo Muani has already made a significant impact, scoring five goals in just three matches.
Kolo Muani’s integration alongside fellow January signings Lloyd Kelly and Renato Veiga will be critical, especially with several key defenders sidelined due to injuries. Despite concerns, Juventus enters this match with renewed confidence as they aim to progress to the knockout rounds.
The Dutch side PSV also faced their share of injury woes, missing key players like defenders Oscar Boscagli and Richard Ledezma. Coach Peter Bosz was hopeful that newly acquired Ivan Perisic could provide a much-needed boost during their challenging tie against Juventus.
Meanwhile, Sporting CP faced Borussia Dortmund in Lisbon. Sporting remained at the top of the Primeira Liga but struggled after the departure of former manager Ruben Amorim, only securing two wins in their last five matches under Rui Borges. The absence of midfielder Morten Hjulmand due to suspension compounded their difficulties going into the leg against Dortmund.
Dortmund arrived with their own challenges, having lost nine of their last 13 away matches this season. However, they secured two of their five away wins in the Champions League, prompting cautious optimism for their away fixture.
As the Champions League playoffs continue, the matches between PSG and Brest, Juventus and PSV, and Sporting vs. Dortmund have already produced exciting football, with all eyes poised on who will emerge victorious in the next leg.
