Derek Carr Retires, Turns Down $30 Million to Prioritize Health

NEW ORLEANS, La. — Derek Carr, the former quarterback for the Saints and Raiders, announced his retirement in May, shocking fans and the NFL community. At 34 years old, Carr is leaving behind a lucrative career to prioritize his health.
In an interview with Front Office Sports, Carr explained that his decision was influenced by a severe shoulder injury he sustained last season. He faced a complex choice: undergo surgery that would sideline him for the 2025 season or retire instead of cashing in on a $30 million salary. He opted for retirement.
“I wouldn’t have been able to play if I had the surgery,” Carr said. “And if I tried to play with it, I wasn’t near 100%, and so that doesn’t help them, either.” Carr chose what he believed was best for both himself and the team.
Despite leaving money on the table, Carr expressed peace with his decision. “I never played just for the money,” he said. “I’ve gained all these things that the world has to offer, and it doesn’t really do anything for your heart.” Carr plans to enjoy his new life, noting, “This beats an OTA any day,” referencing offseason training activities.
Since his retirement, Carr has not ruled out a future in sports media, where his older brother, David Carr, already works as an analyst. “I would absolutely consider it because it’s easy for me to talk about,” he said.
The Carr brothers recently launched a YouTube channel called the Home Grown Network, sharing videos that delve into football, golf, and personal stories. Outside of media, they are also pursuing business ventures, including an investment in a dairy-free ice cream brand.
As Carr adjusts to life after football, he’s focused on family time and leisure, often turning to golf, with sights set on winning the American Century Championship. He mentioned, “I’m locked in on winning,” indicating his competitive spirit remains strong.
While the Saints now look towards their new quarterback competition, including rookies Tyler Shough and Spencer Rattler, Carr’s departure adds a significant chapter to his legacy as he steps away at a personal crossroads.
