Devils Battle Rangers in Critical Matchup for Playoff Position

NEWARK, NJ – The New Jersey Devils and New York Rangers clash today in a crucial matchup that could significantly impact their playoff standings. The game will start at 12:30 p.m. ET at Prudential Center and will be available for viewing on ABC and ESPN+, with radio coverage on the Devils Hockey Network.
The Devils (40-29-7) are looking to consolidate their position in the playoff race as they come off a four-day break following a successful stretch of three wins in their last four matches. In their previous encounter on January 9, the Devils narrowly defeated the Rangers 3-2 in overtime. New Jersey currently holds a 2-1-0 advantage in the season series.
“We recognize the importance of the game,” said Devils head coach Sheldon Keefe. “Both in terms of the rivalry and where both teams sit in the standings.” With only a handful of games left in the regular season, both teams are eager to secure points. The Devils hope to inch closer to clinching a playoff berth, while the Rangers (36-32-7) are fighting to stay in contention, trailing the final Wild Card spot by two points.
While New Jersey will be boosted by the return of forward Cody Glass, who has been out with an injury, the Rangers might be without Mika Zibanejad due to illness, adding to the uncertainty surrounding their lineup. “It’s just the nature of the schedule,” Keefe noted, emphasizing the importance of focusing on their own strategies rather than their opponent’s potential lineup changes.
The Devils’ recent success has largely been propelled by key performances from players like Jesper Bratt, who leads the team with a single-season record of 66 assists, and captain Nico Hischier, who contributes significantly with a team-high 34 goals. “In Jack Hughes‘ absence, Jesper has stepped up immensely,” Keefe added. Despite missing several key players due to injuries, including star Jack Hughes and defenseman Dougie Hamilton, the Devils have managed to maintain their offensive edge.
Defensively, rookie Luke Hughes has stood out, leading all defensemen with 41 points. Goaltender Jacob Markstrom will take his place in net for the Devils after overcoming an MCL injury, earning consecutive victories in his last three starts.
The Rangers, on the other hand, look to Artemi Panarin, their leading scorer, who has notched 34 goals and 48 assists this season. With pressure mounting, New York is in critical need of points, and recent performances against opponents highlight their urgency. “We’re just trying to stay competitive and keep pace in the playoff race,” said Rangers head coach Gerard Gallant.
As the two teams prepare to face off, both will be looking to establish dominance early. The Devils aim to solidify their playoff chances, while the Rangers fight to keep hope alive in a tight playoff race.
