Dexter Tv Series Leaving Netflix

LOS GATOS, California — Fans of the popular crime drama series Dexter are expressing disappointment as the show is set to leave Netflix at midnight on June 19. Since its premiere on Showtime in 2006, Dexter has developed a dedicated fan base, exploring the life of a forensic expert who leads a double life as a vigilante serial killer.

Despite its controversial theme, Dexter’s early seasons received critical acclaim. However, the later seasons did not fare as well, with the Season 8 finale receiving a low rating of 4.8 stars on IMDb. This is only slightly better than the infamous ending of Game of Thrones, which holds a rating of 4 stars.

Since being added to Netflix in June 2024, Dexter has accumulated over 1.01 billion viewing hours, equating to approximately 94.8 million views, according to What's on Netflix. The streaming giant has not provided a reason for removing the series, as its licensing agreement with Showtime appears to have expired.

Netflix frequently removes content when licenses expire, depending on various factors including availability, licensing costs, and popularity. In the U.S., viewers will soon have to turn to Paramount+ to watch Dexter and its spinoff series, including Dexter: New Blood and Dexter: Original Sin.

The announcement has particularly upset millennials, who grew up watching the show, as well as new fans from Generation Z. One user expressed frustration on social media, stating, “Netflix always ruins everything man I just started watching Dexter and it’s leaving tomorrow.” Others echoed similar sentiments, lamenting the series’ departure just as they began to watch it.

In contrast, Cotton, a leading user from another platform, tweeted, “Nobody told me Dexter was being removed from Netflix tomorrow, so I’m bingeing the next four seasons.” The widespread outcry highlights the deep connection viewers have with the series.

Viewers who want to continue their Dexter experience can purchase episodes on DVD or through other services, though they may have to pay upwards of $2.99 per episode. Fans in other countries might still enjoy Dexter on Netflix until March 31, 2026, when the series is expected to depart the platform in the U.K. and Canada.

Newsweek has reached out to Netflix for further comment on this situation.
