Dick Van Dyke Reflects on His Iconic Career at Malibu Event

MALIBU, Calif. — Legendary actor Dick Van Dyke took part in a Q&A session at the Dick & Arlene Van Dyke Present Vandy Camp event last month. At 99 years old, Van Dyke shared stories from his impressive career, captivating the audience with his wit and humor.
During his talk, Van Dyke recalled a pivotal moment from his childhood that ignited his passion for comedy. “I was doing a Christmas pageant at church and I was the baby Jesus. I don’t know what I did, but I got laughs. I said, ‘I like this,'” he said. This moment sparked a lifelong journey of making audiences laugh in various films and television series.
The actor is best known for his role in the iconic ‘Dick Van Dyke Show,’ which aired in the 1960s. Among the episodes he fondly remembers, he highlighted Season 2’s “It May Look Like a Walnut” as a favorite, emphasizing the creative struggles he and his team faced to keep the humor intact. “We fought the network tooth and nail,” he recalled with a laugh, reminiscing about how the episode nearly didn’t make it to air.
Van Dyke also appreciated the camaraderie he shared with his castmates, saying, “There wasn’t a star in the bunch. Everybody just enjoyed coming to work.” Reflecting on the invaluable live audience experience, he remarked, “The shows that do comedy without an audience, I don’t understand those people. I need an audience, and we had a great audience every week to play to.”
He recalled one particular episode, the Season 3 premiere titled “That’s My Boy??,” which allowed him to witness the audience’s vibrant reactions. “When the audience saw that couple walking in the door, they started to laugh. It was the longest laugh I have ever experienced in my life,” he described.
Van Dyke expressed gratitude towards series creator Carl Reiner, who supported the show’s bold storylines, stating, “I was so happy with this script I couldn’t wait to get it on. I knew it was something very, very special,” he was quoted by the New York Times.
As Van Dyke nears his 100th birthday, he continues to cherish his memories and the laughter he has brought to millions.
