Diwali, also known as the Festival of Lights, is one of the most significant festivals in Hindu culture. In 2024, Diwali will be celebrated on October 31, marking the peak of a five-day festival period, each day with its own distinct significance.

According to the Hindu lunar calendar, Diwali falls on the 15th day of the month of Kartik, which is often considered the darkest night of the year. On this day, families across India and the world light diyas (earthen lamps), create colorful rangolis, and adorn their homes with twinkling lights to celebrate the triumph of light over darkness and good over evil.

The festival begins with Dhanteras on October 29, which is a day dedicated to wealth and prosperity. On Dhanteras, people worship Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Kuber, purchasing precious metals such as gold and silver as a sign of auspiciousness and prosperity.

Choti Diwali, or Naraka Chaturdashi, falls on October 31 this year, coinciding with the main Diwali day. This day commemorates Lord Krishna’s victory over the demon Narakasura, symbolizing the victory of good over evil and light over darkness.

Diwali itself, which falls on October 31, also marks the return of Lord Rama, along with Mata Sita and Lakshman, to Ayodhya after 14 years of exile. According to tradition, this day brings familial joy and is celebrated with fireworks, sweets, and rituals, including Lakshmi Puja, performed in the evening to seek blessings of wealth and happiness.

Following Diwali, Govardhan Puja is observed on November 2, honoring Lord Krishna’s protection of the people of Mathura from Indra’s wrath by lifting the Govardhan Mountain.

The festivals conclude with Bhai Dooj or Bhau Beej on November 3, celebrating the bond between brothers and sisters, similar to the Raksha Bandhan festival, with special prayers and rituals.

The Lakshmi Puja muhurat, crucial for the observance, is determined by the Drik Panchang, advising auspicious times from 6:52 PM to 8:41 PM.
