Dodgers Consider Top Prospect Alex Freeland Before Giants Series

LOS ANGELES, CA — The Los Angeles Dodgers are eyeing a key call-up as they head into a crucial series against the San Francisco Giants. With a 41-28 record, the Dodgers are looking to solidify their position at the top of the National League West, currently competing against the Giants and Bob Melvin for first place.
Manager Dave Roberts is evaluating several options to bolster the team as they approach the middle of the season. Among these is Alex Freeland, a promising prospect playing for the Dodgers’ Triple-A affiliate in Oklahoma City. Drafted in the third round of 2022, Freeland has made strides in his development, showcasing defensive skills that may earn him a spot in the major leagues.
This season, Freeland has played 63 games in Triple-A, hitting .260 with 64 hits and 46 walks. Though his batting average may not stand out, his .372 on-base percentage ranks him among the top 30 in the majors. His speed on the base paths has also been impressive, amassing 12 stolen bases in 63 games. He has scored 45 runs and driven in 46 RBIs, making him a valuable player for the Dodgers’ minor league system.
Roberts has already welcomed other young players like Hyeseong Kim and Dalton Rushing to the major league roster, allowing them to gain experience alongside established stars like Mookie Betts. Freeland could similarly benefit from playing with Betts, learning from his preparation and game strategy.
Defensively, Freeland offers versatility, capable of playing both third base and shortstop, which could be crucial as the season progresses. His defense is a significant asset that makes him the fourth-ranked prospect on MLB Pipeline. By bringing him up, Roberts not only adds talent but also allows Betts the chance to focus more on his outfield play, enhancing the team’s overall performance.
On the other hand, veteran outfielder Michael Conforto has struggled since joining the Dodgers this offseason. Although Roberts has not indicated plans to demote him, some time off could help Conforto regain his form. Meanwhile, Freeland’s speed makes him an appealing backup option, particularly for crucial games.
As the Dodgers strive for back-to-back titles, introducing promising players like Freeland could secure a brighter future for the franchise. The decision to call him up, while possibly not imminent, signals the team’s commitment to developing its young talent.
