Tommy Edman Dodgers Injury Update

Los Angeles, California — The Los Angeles Dodgers are monitoring the health of utility player Tommy Edman as he struggles with an ankle injury. Edman, who has missed time during the season due to this issue, played in Game 1 of the National League Division Series (NLDS) but remains limited.

Manager Dave Roberts provided an update, stating, “I think it’s holding up. Not getting any worse. Not getting much better.” He emphasized the importance of Edman taking at-bats against starter pitchers while also being prepared to rest him if necessary.

Edman’s journey this season has been challenging. After a strong start, hitting .252 with an OPS of .818 through 30 games, he first landed on the injured list in May with ankle inflammation. Upon returning, he experienced a noticeable decline, batting just .212 with an OPS of .596 over the next 56 games.

Following additional setbacks, including a sprained ankle that sidelined him for over a month, Edman’s current performance has not been ideal; he was hitting .209 in his last 11 games before the postseason. According to Andrew Friedman, the Dodgers’ president of baseball operations, Edman aggravated his injury while playing in the outfield in Arizona last week.

Friedman stated, “He kind of aggravated it last week in Arizona playing the outfield. He’ll do whatever. But I think the best chance for us to keep him growing strong right now is limit the amount of movement in the outfield.” Consequently, Edman is returning to infield duties as he continues to contribute to the Dodgers’ postseason run.

Despite these setbacks, Edman was able to contribute in Game 1 of the NLDS, going 1-for-4 with a run scored. The Dodgers are eager to see continued improvement from Edman while balancing his health as they advance through the playoffs.
