Dolphins Buccaneers Linebacker Trade News March 2025

MIAMI, Fla. — In an unexpected turn of events during the 2025 NFL free agency period, the Miami Dolphins and Tampa Bay Buccaneers swapped linebackers on Thursday. Former Buccaneers linebacker K.J. Britt is heading to Miami, while seasoned veteran Anthony Walker Jr. is joining Tampa Bay.

The transaction was confirmed by multiple league sources and agent Drew Rosenhaus. Britt, a fifth-round pick from Auburn in 2021, spent four seasons with the Buccaneers. Last season, he emerged as a starter, playing 11 games and recording a career-high 72 tackles.

Walker, a product of Northwestern, played eight games last season for the Dolphins, starting in half of those. After spending time with the Indianapolis Colts and the Cleveland Browns, Walker is bringing his experience to Tampa Bay, where he will reportedly join a linebacking corps that is adapting with key changes.

“K.J. has shown he can step up under pressure and brings a fresh energy to our defense,” said Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel. ”We’re excited to see how he integrates into our system next to Jordyn Brooks.”

While Walker was rated 81st among linebackers last season by Pro Football Focus, Britt had a less favorable ranking, coming in at 83rd out of 84. This surprising swap raises questions about both players’ past performances and future contributions.

Britt’s size has been a topic of discussion as well; listed at 6 feet and 235 pounds, he is considered undersized compared to his competitors. However, his agility and experience on special teams may serve as invaluable assets to the Dolphins, who are looking to bolster their defense.

“We believe K.J. possesses the right mindset and skills to flourish here,” said Dolphins’ general manager Chris Grier. “This is an important acquisition for us.”

Walker punched in a respectable season with the Dolphins, tallying 68 tackles, one sack, and an interception. However, injuries limited his impact, a recurring issue as he has not completed a full season since 2020.

Dolphins linebacker Tyrel Dodson, who has gained traction in the team’s rotation, also contributed to Walker’s diminished role last year. “I see this as an opportunity for growth, not just for me but for the entire team,” Dodson commented regarding the recent changes in the linebacking unit.

The Dolphins will face the challenge of integrating Britt into their lineup effectively while managing existing injuries and performance levels. As for the Buccaneers, acquiring Walker adds depth to their linebacker position, providing a veteran presence who can mentor younger players as they embark on an upswing in their performance goals.

The offseason is still young, with both teams eyeing additional moves as they navigate through trades and acquisitions leading up to the upcoming season.
