Dominic Smith Becomes Free Agent After Opting Out of Yankees Contract

Scranton, Pennsylvania — Veteran first baseman and outfielder Dominic Smith has opted out of his contract with the New York Yankees, becoming a free agent, according to ESPN‘s Jeff Passan. This decision comes after Smith played much of the 2025 season with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
Smith, 29, initially signed a minor league deal with the Yankees in late March. He later opted out of that contract after failing to make the Opening Day roster, only to re-sign with the team on a new minor league contract a week later. In 45 games this season at Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, he recorded a batting average of .255, along with eight home runs and 28 RBIs.
The outfielder had a standout performance in May, hitting .317 with seven home runs and 22 RBIs in just 23 games. This offensive surge prompted Smith to seek major league opportunities elsewhere, particularly as the Yankees have a crowded roster.
The Yankees have not found room for Smith on the active roster, despite his solid numbers and versatility in the outfield and first base. Yankees manager Aaron Boone commented on Smith’s contributions and readiness, stating, “He’s a big league player. He’s been great in the room. He’s performed.”
Smith was drafted by the New York Mets in the first round of the 2013 MLB Draft and debuted with the team in 2017. He spent six seasons with the Mets, compiling a career batting average of .246 and hitting 46 home runs. After a challenging 2022 season, the Mets did not offer him a contract, leading to his free agency.
Following a stint with the Washington Nationals, where he signed a $2 million contract, Smith also played for the Boston Red Sox and Cincinnati Reds. His latest move to re-enter free agency comes after he demonstrated his potential in the minor leagues this season, and he will now look to secure a new opportunity in the majors.
Smith’s journey in professional baseball has showcased resilience and adaptability, with hopes of returning to the majors lingering as he seeks new prospects in a competitive league.
