Don Hasselbeck, Former NFL Tight End, Passes Away at 70

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. — Former NFL tight end Don Hasselbeck passed away Monday due to a heart attack, as confirmed by his son, Matt Hasselbeck, on social media. He was 70 years old.
In a heartfelt tribute, Matt Hasselbeck expressed the family’s sorrow, writing, “It is with deep sorrow that we share the passing of our father, Don Hasselbeck. We want to thank our parents’ neighbors and all the medical professionals who came to his aid.” He described his father as a remarkable husband, father, grandfather, friend, coach, player, artist, mentor, and storyteller.
Don Hasselbeck was an All-American at the University of Colorado before being drafted by the New England Patriots in the second round of the 1977 NFL Draft. He played with the Patriots for seven seasons, where he recorded 99 catches for 1,444 yards and 15 touchdowns.
His NFL career continued when he was traded to the Los Angeles Raiders during the 1983 season, contributing to the team’s victory in Super Bowl XVIII against the Washington Redskins. During that game, Hasselbeck successfully blocked an extra point attempt, showcasing his versatility as a player. He finished the season with two touchdown receptions and later added a playoff touchdown catch during his time with the New York Giants in 1984.
Across his 123 career games, Hasselbeck completed 107 receptions for 1,542 yards, scoring 18 touchdowns. His impressive on-field legacy is complemented by the athletic achievements of his sons. Both Matt and Tim Hasselbeck went on to play quarterback in the NFL, with Matt becoming a three-time Pro Bowl selection and leading the Seattle Seahawks to the Super Bowl in 2005.
After retiring, Don Hasselbeck settled in Norfolk, Massachusetts, where he continued to influence the lives of those around him. His son praised him for being a family leader, stating, “He helped set our feet on solid ground. Married to and in love with our mom, Betsy, for 50 years, they built their house on the rock of Jesus Christ.”
Matt Hasselbeck concluded the tribute with gratitude, reflecting on the deep void left by his father. “There is a 6’ 7” hole in our hearts. He will be so missed by so many. We are beyond grateful that he was our dad and look forward to Heaven and being all together again.”
