Donald Trump Jr. Visits Greenland Amid Controversy Over US Interest
Donald Trump Jr., son of US President-elect Donald Trump, arrived in Greenland on Tuesday for a private visit, reigniting discussions about his father’s controversial interest in acquiring the autonomous Danish territory. The trip, described as a “very long, personal, day-trip,” comes just weeks after the president-elect reiterated his desire to take control of Greenland for national security purposes.
In a post on his Truth Social platform, the president-elect confirmed his son’s visit, stating that Don Jr. and “various representatives” would explore Greenland’s “most magnificent areas and sights.” He also repeated his belief that Greenland would “benefit tremendously” if it became part of the United States, adding, “We will protect it, and cherish it, from a very vicious outside world.”
Greenland’s Prime Minister, Mute Bourup Egede, has consistently rejected the idea of selling the island, stating in December that “Greenland belongs to the people of Greenland.” The Danish government, which oversees Greenland’s foreign affairs, also distanced itself from the visit, noting that it was not an official US trip and declining further comment.
The president-elect’s renewed interest in Greenland has drawn criticism from Danish politicians. Conservative MP Rasmus Jarlov called the approach “record-setting disrespect” toward loyal allies. Meanwhile, Greenland’s push for independence from Denmark has added another layer of complexity to the situation. In his New Year’s address, Prime Minister Egede emphasized the need to break free from “the shackles of colonialism.”
Greenland, with a population of 57,000, holds strategic importance due to its location on the shortest route between North America and Europe. It is also home to Thule Air Base, a critical US military installation. While the US has long viewed Greenland as a key asset, the idea of purchasing it has been met with resistance since it was first proposed by President Andrew Johnson in the 1860s.
Donald Trump Jr.’s visit, though framed as a personal trip, has sparked speculation about its underlying motives. On his podcast, Triggered, he clarified, “No, I am not buying Greenland,” but acknowledged his admiration for the island and its people. The trip underscores the Trump family’s ongoing fascination with Greenland, even as local leaders and international allies remain firmly opposed to any transfer of sovereignty.
