Dua Lipa's 'houdini' Tops Dance/mix Show Airplay Chart

British pop sensation Dua Lipa has once again secured the top spot on Billboard‘s Dance/Mix Show Airplay chart with her track ‘Houdini’, climbing to No. 1 from the No. 2 position on the ranking dated March 2.

The track marks Lipa’s fifth chart-topper on the Dance/Mix Show Airplay chart, which tracks the weekly plays of songs on a panel of leading 24/7 dance stations, boosted by mix show hours on pop stations, as monitored by Mediabase and provided to Billboard by Luminate.

Lipa’s ‘Houdini’, a tribute to the legendary magician Harry Houdini, initially debuted at No. 1 on Billboard’s Hot Dance/Electronic Songs chart. The single, released under Warner Records, first claimed the top spot in November and maintained its reign for 10 consecutive weeks on the most recent chart dated February 24.

Following Houdini’s passing in 1926, numerous artists have drawn inspiration from the iconic figure. Walter Brennan captured a week at No. 100 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1962 with a song, while Kon Kan reached No. 33 on Dance Singles Sales in 1989 with another. Foster the People‘s track ‘Houdini’ also made an appearance on the Alternative Airplay chart, peaking at No. 37 in 2012.

Delving into Billboard’s rich archives unveils an interesting connection to the famous escape artist. An ad in the December 29, 1934 issue commemorating the publication’s 40th anniversary featured Bess Houdini, Houdini’s widow. The ad humorously remarked on Billboard’s growth alongside the magic industry, with Bess playfully congratulating the publication on its long-standing success.
