Dwayne Johnson, famously known for his action-packed roles, undergoes a striking transformation in the initial glimpse of the upcoming film ‘The Smashing Machine.’ Directed by Benny Safdie, the movie features Johnson as the iconic MMA fighter Mark Kerr, accompanied by his ‘Jungle Cruise’ co-star Emily Blunt, portraying Kerr’s wife Dawn Staples.

The snapshot reveals a nearly unrecognizable Johnson in the persona of Kerr, exuding a strong physical presence with added facial prosthetics that aid in his portrayal of the revered MMA figure. Kerr, a decorated athlete, secured numerous MMA titles, including two-time UFC Heavyweight Tournament Champion and World Vale Tudo Championship winner.

‘The Smashing Machine’ showcases Safdie’s independent venture into solo feature direction following previous successful collaborations with his brother Josh in A24‘s acclaimed hits like ‘Good Time’ and ‘Uncut Gems.’ Johnson and Safdie’s encounter over the film occurred in 2019, with the project taking a pause due to pandemic-induced disruptions before resuming later on.

Johnson expressed his attraction to ‘The Smashing Machine,’ citing Safdie’s penchant for authentic storytelling that delves into raw and real human experiences. The actor aims to challenge himself with roles that explore profound aspects of humanity and struggle, marking a significant evolution in his career trajectory.

Notably, production for ‘The Smashing Machine’ is helmed by Seven Bucks Productions, co-founded by Johnson and Dany Garcia, alongside Safdie’s Out for the Count banner, Eli Bush, and David Koplan. A24, the renowned production house, is involved in the film’s financing and production, with the release date yet to be disclosed.
