Dylan Strome Reflects on Career Journey with Capitals

ARLINGTON, Va. — Dylan Strome has become an integral part of the Washington Capitals, reflecting on his journey in the NHL and the support that helped him grow as a player. Strome, who is in his first season with the Capitals after a stint with the Chicago Blackhawks, shared his thoughts during a recent interview.
Strome vividly recalled a game when he glanced at the crowd and noticed an overwhelming number of jerseys bearing the name of his teammate, Alex Ovechkin. “Every time he touched the puck, there was this hum of excitement,” Strome said. “I’ve played with great players, but watching him chase Gretzky’s record has been incredible.”
The 26-year-old Strome has had his share of ups and downs in his career. He was drafted third overall by the Arizona Coyotes in 2015, but after struggling during the 2016-17 season, he was sent down to the AHL. “It was hard to see the bigger picture at that time,” he recalled, admitting he struggled with the pressures of being a high draft pick.
His breakthrough came with a trade to Chicago less than a year after facing setbacks. Strome described it as a pivotal moment. “I went from feeling like I couldn’t get out of first gear to playing 18 or 19 minutes a night,” he said, praising the experience of playing alongside veterans like Patrick Kane and Jonathan Toews.
As a free agent last summer, Strome reflected on his options. “I wanted to go somewhere I could show what I can do,” he said. After discussions with his family, he chose to sign with the Capitals. “It felt good to me. I wanted to be a part of something special,” he added.
During training camp, he was struck by the presence of Ovechkin. “He just walked in with a huge smile on his face, and you could feel the energy,” Strome said. He noted the buzz around the team as Ovechkin closed in on Wayne Gretzky’s goal record, creating a memorable atmosphere.
Strome also highlighted the camaraderie within the Capitals, attributing their success to a balanced approach on and off the ice. “We want to be creative, exciting, and hard to play against,” Strome emphasized, recognizing that the team’s leadership, including Ovechkin and John Carlson, contributed greatly to their performance.
As the current season progresses, Strome is poised to set personal records, already reaching 81 points. “I’m really proud to be a Capital,” Strome said, acknowledging the support of fans and the community in Washington. “Thank you for welcoming us.”
