Early Voting Closes in New York and New Jersey Ahead of Election Day
Early voting in New York City and New Jersey has come to a close as of Sunday, November 3, 2024. In New York City, over 1 million residents cast their ballots during the nine-day early voting period, marking a significant turnout. This figure represents more than 20% of active registered voters in the five boroughs, according to state voter rolls.
The early voting period, which began on October 26, saw high participation, with many voters taking advantage of the convenience it offers. “I think it’s very convenient in the sense that you can take your time now instead of the actual day,” said Marceline Herrera Marsalis, a resident voting at SUNY Downstate Medical Center in Brooklyn.
In New Jersey, early voting also concluded on Sunday, with 247,000 people voting on the first weekend alone. The state’s early voting period followed a similar schedule to New York’s, with polls open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on weekdays and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Sundays.
Polls will now be closed on Monday and will reopen on Tuesday for Election Day, with voting stations in New York open from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. Voters in both states are casting ballots not only in the presidential race between Kamala Harris and Donald Trump but also in various local and state races, including Senate, House, State Senate, State Assembly, and judicial positions. Additionally, New Yorkers will vote on several ballot referenda, including proposals related to constitutional amendments and local governance.
Voters are advised to check their specific polling sites for Election Day, as these may differ from the early voting locations. For more information, voters can visit the Board of Elections websites for New York City and New Jersey.
